The chance of looking after a living creature is very rewarding for young children. Not only do they learn about the animal and its life, but also how to care for it.
Some small wild animals and insects can be kept for a few days without much harm, for example, garden snails, caterpillars, spiders and worms. Keep them in containers which let in air, but will also prevent them from escaping, such as small fish tanks or jars, seald firmly with netting or paper covered with lots of pin holes.
